Cooking Classes on Cruise Ships: Where the Real Kitchens Are

Cooking classes on cruise ships range from a chef demonstrating a dish in the theater to a full teaching kitchen where every guest has a station, a set of knives and an instructor. If you want to actually cook, look for the second kind — and know that only a handful of ships have one.

The Dedicated Culinary Schools at Sea

Oceania Cruises — The Culinary Center. Oceania launched its hands-on cooking school with the ship Marina and now runs it on Marina, Riviera, Vista and Allura. Classes are held in teaching kitchens with individual cooking stations, and the line has added themed classes tied to the regions its ships visit. Allura’s center also includes a Chef’s Studio.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises — Culinary Arts Kitchen. Regent’s teaching kitchen is aboard Seven Seas Explorer, Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Grandeur, with classes planned for its next ship, Seven Seas Prestige. Each student cooks at a personal workstation, and classes are booked in advance.

Demonstrations, Chef’s Tables and Market Tours

Many more ships offer something food-related short of a school: cooking demonstrations in a theater or lounge, chef’s-table dinners where the chef explains each course, galley tours, and shore excursions that visit a local market and end with a cooking lesson ashore. These are excellent ways to learn on a mainstream ship; check the daily program or ask us what a particular sailing offers.

  • Best for hands-on learning: a dedicated teaching kitchen.
  • Best for watching and tasting: demonstrations and chef’s tables.
  • Best for local flavor: market-and-cooking shore excursions.

Tips for Booking a Cooking Class at Sea

  • Reserve classes as soon as booking opens for your sailing; teaching kitchens have a limited number of stations.
  • Pick classes linked to the itinerary — a Mediterranean class before a day in Italy, for example.
  • Tell the ship about food allergies when you reserve.
  • Check cancellation rules; some classes are non-refundable close to the date.

Combining classes with port food experiences turns a cruise into a culinary course. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can help you choose a ship and itinerary for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which cruise ships have cooking classes?

Hands-on cooking schools are found on a small number of ships. Oceania Cruises runs The Culinary Center on Marina, Riviera, Vista and Allura, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises has its Culinary Arts Kitchen on Seven Seas Explorer, Splendor and Grandeur. Many other lines offer cooking demonstrations or chef-led experiences; check each ship’s program.

Are cooking classes on cruise ships included in the fare?

Usually not. On both Oceania and Regent the hands-on classes are reserved separately for a fee, and spaces are limited, so book early.

Do I need cooking experience?

No. Classes are designed for home cooks of every level, and each guest typically works at a personal station with an instructor demonstrating each step.
